Susan Stout
Doula • Speaker • Helper
Susan is an End-Of-Life Doula, Consultant, Speaker and Educator, helping to normalize conversations around death and dying. Certified though Lifespan Doulas, she is also a proud member of NEDA (National End of Life Doula Association), INELDA and holds the NEDA Proficiency Badge. She volunteers weekly with the Palliative Care Team at Stamford Hospital, being with families and individuals nearing end of life.
Susan trained with Respecting Choices as an Advance Care Planning Facilitator, working with individuals to help them get those ducks in a row sooner rather than later. “The documents are only as good as the conversations around them” is a guiding principal in her work. What documents we need and when shouldn’t be a mystery.
“We don’t get to practice dying, we can only prepare for it” is the thought that motivates her to host community conversations encouraging people to remember life comes with an end date, to hold that idea not with fear but with curiosity and acceptance, and to understand that preparing ahead is good for us and a tremendous gift for our loved ones. Receiving a terminal diagnosis or feeling an illness advance can be a lonely thing, but Susan can step into that space and help smooth some sharp edges. The photo of Susan with her pup, Indy, reminds her of just how hard it really is to show up when our loved ones are facing the end, and helps her to remember to be gentle out there.
